the 2026 J. P. Schauder Medal goes to the distinguished French mathematician

Professor Henri Berestycki

from

École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, France

and University of Maryland, College Park, USA

for his exceptional achievements in the field of nonlinear analysis, as well as for his numerous applications in many other branches of science. Henri Berestycki’s work employs, among other methods, the Leray–Schauder topological degree, Morse theory, and minimax techniques, along with many original and innovative tools that enable both quantitative and qualitative analysis of solutions to a wide range of problems. The scope of his research is remarkably broad, encompassing areas such as mathematical physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and the social sciences.

Henri Berestycki is the author or co-author of more than 170 scientific papers published in leading mathematical journals. His list of collaborators includes over 90 researchers. A charismatic and dedicated teacher, he has inspired many young people to pursue careers in mathematics and has supervised more than 30 doctoral students. He was also the principal investigator of the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant ReaDi (2013–2018), devoted to Reaction–Diffusion Equations, Propagation, and Modelling.

Professor Berestycki graduated from the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1975. He obtained his doctorate under the supervision of Professor H. Brézis in 1975 at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (now Sorbonne Université), where he also completed his habilitation in 1980. He began his career at the University of Chicago (1975–1977) as an L. E. Dickson Instructor. He then joined the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in Paris as a researcher. Since 1983, he has held professorial positions at several institutions, including Université Paris-Nord, École Polytechnique, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, and École Normale Supérieure in Paris. In 2001, he joined the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, where he has held the Chair of Mathematical Analysis and Modeling and where he continues to serve as Professor Emeritus since 2020. He is also affiliated with the University of Maryland, College Park, where he has been spending one semester per year since 2023.

Henri Berestycki has received numerous awards and honors, including the Carrière Prize of the French Academy of Sciences (1988), the Humboldt–Gay-Lussac Prize (2004), the Sophie Germain Prize of the French Academy of Sciences (2004), and the title of Knight of the French Legion of Honor (2010). He was elected Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (2013) and International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2013).
