The 3rd edition of the J. P. Schauder's Prize for young mathematicians competition has started

By the decision of the Scientific Council, the third edition of the competition for the Juliusz Paweł Schauder Prize for young mathematicians has been opened. According to the competition regulations, the Prize is an individual award granted for achievements in the field of nonlinear mathematical analysis. Candidates for the competition can be nominated by members of the Center's Council or other persons with established scientific authority.

The competition jury consists of:

  • Aleksander Ćwiszewski (chairman) (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun)
  • Tomasz Cieślak (Institute of Mathematics, Polish Academy of Sciences)
  • Marek Galewski (Lodz Technical University)
  • Grzegorz Graff (Gdańsk Technical University)
  • Piotr Kalita (Jagiellonian University in Krakow)
  • Jarosław Mederski (Institute of Mathematics, Polish Academy of Sciences).

Applications for the Prize, along with justifications, can be submitted to the Center until the end of December 2025 at the following address: Juliusz Paweł Schauder University Center for Nonlinear Studies, ul. Chopina 12/18, 87-100 Toruń, POLAND

or electronically to the email address: cbn@umk.pl.

Winners of the second edition of the competition

In the second edition of the competition for the Juliusz Schauder Prize for young mathematicians the jury decided to award the Prize to

Bartosz Bieganowski

(Warsaw University, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń)

for achievements in studying variational methods and their applications to semilinear partial differential equations that were published between 2018 and 2022 in the series of five publications.

Due to the very high level of submitted applications, two additional distinctions in the competition have been awarded:

  • For Wojciech Górny (Universität Wien)

  • and Jakub Skrzeczkowski (Warsaw University)

The Prize and distinctions are planned to be handed over during a joint ceremony with the awarding of the J. P. Schauder Medal on June 18, 2024 at the VIII Symposium on Nonlinear Analysis.

Decision of the jury of the first edition of the competition for the Juliusz Schauder Prize for young mathematicians

The jury of the first edition of the competition for the Juliusz Schauder Prize for young mathematicians decided to award the Prize to

Jacek Jendrej

(CNRS and LAGA, Université Sorbonne Paris Nord)

for achievements in studying the dynamics of nonlinear partial differential equations that were published between 2017 and 2020 in the series of five publications.

J. Jendrej constructs and studies the asymptotic behavior of (multi-)solitons in nonlinear critical wave and Schrödinger equations, which gave answers/confirmations to known hypotheses from front-end research. His advanced constructions involve methods from many different fields of mathematics, including use of approximation techniques, variational structure of equations or energy estimates. An important role is also played by the nontrivial application of topological arguments coming from fixed point theory. In Juliusz Schauder Center Jury’s opinion the papers constitute a significant contribution in the very active field of dispersive partial differential equations. The results show erudition and potential of the Awardee as well as point out further perspectives for research that he continues in collaboration with both renowned mathematicians and younger researchers.

Taking into account the very high level of submitted applications, the jury together with the Director of the Center decided to establish additional distinctions in the competition:

  • For Maciej Starostka (Gdańsk University of Technology) – First Distinction,
  • For Wojciech Górny (Warsaw University) and Marcin Sroka (Jagiellonian University) – Second Distinction.

The Prize and distinctions are planned to be handed over during a joint ceremony with the awarding of the J. P. Schauder Medal on June 5, 2021, where Jacek Jendrej will deliver a lecture.

During the related webinar on June 18, 2021 the three Awardees: M. Starostka, W. Górny and M. Sroka deliver their talks. For more details, see here.
